I stopped off yesterday afternoon for a picture of margaritas as a last hora.

Yesterday was the last day it was opened.

Growing up, if it was your birthday, we often got to pick where our family went to celebrate.

We got two choices..

El Charros
or
Emil Villas

I always picked El Charros because of the blue cheese dip and you got a sugar cookie with a cherry in the middle for desert. It was probably the start of my taco bell taste😁😁😁

Aaah, the mean streets of Lafayette. Where street smarts is acquired from watching movies like "The outsiders" and "The Warriors". I can see how people become dillusional living in such an area, unaware of what's going on in surrounding areas.

Like many that get pigeon holes by others...I have a little less of a bubble experience then you think. And since you seem to have me figured out...I will fill in a few of the holes.

It’s a long story but I was fortunate not to only know the lafayette bubble... where, by the way, our family was the poorest on the street. for man years five of us lived in a one bedroom rental where m parents pulled out the couch every night and their closet was the back porch.

one of my best friends growing up was from the flats of Oakland and many times we went back to his “hood” to play basketball in the park.... mostly once we could drive... and for the record...most often I was the only not black guy at the park.

I was fortunate enough to attend a pretty diverse catholic high school where my good friends included..

A proud mexican from the farmlands of livermore where he lived in a three bedroom house with 7 other family members including is parents and grandparents.

A friend that lived in martinez where his house was right up against the shell refinery fence where he lived with his only living relative..his grandma...after graduation he immediately joined the Navy to not be a burden and get to work.

An italian guy from pittsburg...who lived down the street from what they called The pueblo...let’s just say..it wasn’t the high rent district.

then..a year after high school I fell in love with a girl I was with for 18 years... she too was from martinez and had grown up with her three siblings in a two bedroom house....raised by a widowed mother whose only work was labor at a farm/vineyard....after my girls dad died when the oldest child was 9 years old they lived on his SSI and each child received about $25 per week as long as they were in school and under 22 years old? one more thing...he mother spoke no english..only japenese...

So...I am sure my understanding of place early in life was far from the average Lafayette kid. But you are right...the average rich city kid has no clue as to how well they have it.

But...pigeon holing a group can be dangerous

The mean streets of Lafayette where the population is 84.7 white (0.3 percent black), the medium income is over $140,000 annually and the average home cost 1.5 million.

Oh wait, as I read on I see that in your private school (which the average cost is $20,000 annually) there was a black student, a Mexican student and even an Italian student. Wow!

Lafayette for sure has grown to high end place, but you gotta remember... my growing up, experience years, were from 10 years old to let’s say 21....That’s a period from 1969-1980.

Lafayette had its big money areas and then the rest of it was more or less like Walnut Creek...MIDDLE. CLASS INCOME EARNERS... back then... the rough areas were through the tunnel Richmond/Oakland and over the hill to Pittsburg.

I would never call Lafayette tough...and I would never say I had a tough upbringing.. and that had nothing to do with money... it had everything to do with being part of a great family, and living in a neighborhood filled with catholics and mormons that valued and lived with christian values.

De La Salle was expensive...$ 1,200 plus book my senior year.... that’s why my parents couldn’t afford to send all my siblings there...

but....

I have no doubt I learned a lot more about the difference between income earning class differences at DLS then any of my siblings experienced at Acalanes HS...

DLS had many students on “scholarship”.... meaning they were awarded free tuition as long as they worked one block (class hour in the library, cafeteria or office).

DLS was filled with all income level families...I would say that’s one of the schools biggest values... And you know what you learn... more or less people of all income levels are alike... they want to be treated well, respected and given an opportunity to strive for their goals. The main difference is the cars they drive, houses they live in and vacations they take...

in other words earthly goods stuff that doesn’t matter or make a person and in a christian world are of no value.

DLS had another thing going for it.... if you were trouble or didn’t want to be there they released you or expelled you... our class started with 175 boys as freshman and graduated with around 115 students learning to be men. There were NO intimidation bully’s at DLS... they were kicked to the curb

Finally... you are off on your lafayette stats...

You can’t buy a walk in and livable house in lafayette for 1.5M...it’s more like 1.8M and....you average income includes all the retirees mostly living off passive income and the apartment renters down town

If you could do the stats the actual home owning, working income earners would average over a half mil per year...maybe even push $700,000 on average/mean
