240 across the board or just conference?

Was wondering if there has been any confirmation on if it will be across the board or not? Deciding what we’re going to do with bats, but don’t want to be at a disadvantage if we get the new 240s.

so here is my unsolicited thoughts. No this won’t directly answer your question.

The testing options are all bats have to pass at 240
Or
It is allowed that 220 bats have to pass at 220, 240 bats have to test at 240.

Why would a bat manufacturer want to allow 220 bats to be tested at 220 going forward? That would hurt their sales going forward and would just drive the resale price up for the older models that the bat companies are no longer making money off of. People wouldn’t buy 240 bats until all the 220 bats were gone and or wouldn’t pass. the buyers would just go through the 2nd hand market to keep using 220 bats that would be allowed to test lower. If the 220 bat has to test at 240 the assumed life expectancy of the bat is decreased faster than if it could pass at 240 and should increase bat sales.

Seeing as bat companies are still releasing 220 bats and the decision hasn’t been posted seems to lead that the manufacturers have stock that they want to sell before a decision comes out that all bats will have to pass at 240 bc the two test option doesn’t make sense for the manufacturers money wise.

I have no inside knowledge and could be wrong and this is all from a big picture view I’m sure here and there tournament testing will do their own thing.

Everything you said makes perfect sense. We’re looking into a bat package for the team, but don’t want to do it if it puts us at a disadvantage. You’d think the manufacturers would want 240 across the board. You may be right on wanting to sell bats and wait to make it official.

i believe it was the manufacturers that wanted the old bats grandfathered in.

It’s confusing that for now they are grandfathering the 220’s but instituting the bats produced are 240 for 2021. If I can still use a 220 why would I spend $300 on a model I don’t need. They need to make a definitive ruling here at some point.

DW is correct but bottom line is all bats, new or grandfathered, must be 240 or above.

Keep in mind that this was a USSSA decision NOT from any nat company. If you are playing in a sanctioned, tested USSSA event, ANY bat you use has to be 240 or above. ANY bat that has a USSSA stamp that is 240 and above will be OK for a tested, sanctioned event. Other Associations have not necessarily adopted the 240 spec so any bat there that tests 220 or above will be allowed. Understand though that NO BAT COMPANY is allowed to produce 220 technology bats anymore with the USSSA stamp on them. So....any bat with that stamp and the 220 technologies most likely will increase in value as time goes on. So....I would recommend you get with me or your favorite MIKEN dealer and get one of our LAT CALL 220 spec bats ordered up right away....

I’m sure manufacturers has some say in it as there would be a lot of lost inventory. Manufacturers are still producing and selling 220’s with stamps and from Facebook people are stocking up on them. It’s almost 2021 and other than Pure and Easton I don’t see manufacturers selling or pushing 240’s.

Are the 240’s something USSSA will pushing their directors hard on?

Not a big deal.

I just think 220 bats are allowed in all non conference tournaments. Else why would they be grandfathered in?

This is what has been said at every meeting between USSSA and the manufacturers.

1. Old stamp bats ie 220 bats will be legal for play indefinitely.
They will be tested to the original 220 test that bats where made for and customer bought them for.

2. Conference events are treated differently and have their own set of rules. The current proposal thats on the table is that starting the 2021 season all conference events both men and women will be played with 240 bats. This doesn’t mean old stamp bats that test above 240 - it means they will have to have the new USSSA stamp. This is being ruled on by USSSA currently.

Per USSSA contract

1. Manufacturers had to stop manufacturing old stamp bats as of Sept 1,2020. Any manufacturer found to be still making bats after that date will have all bats put on the banned list and their USSSA license revoked.

2. All warranty bats must be replaced with New stamp bats starting Feb. 2021.

What about non conference teams playing in Conference events? So they need to go out and buys new bats for 1 or 2 events?

I expect that is what is going to happen for non-conference teams. Mainly I want it totally clarified that at non-conference USSSA events, that don’t test, that all of a sudden they’re not gonna start looking for new stamps and throwing 220’s out.

Thanks for clearing that up. It appears that it’s possible that COMFERENCE teams may have to wait on this ruling so they can procure only 240 bats. In the meantime, at least the other bats out there are OK for non conference use.

Might be a problem getting those local non conference teams to play in the Conf events if that's the case.

Why not slowly phase the 220 out? 2021 season they test at 220. 2022 season, 230. 2023 season 240. None will have been made since sept 2020. No one is stashing that many bats...or are there? Gives people holding 220 bats more than enough time to sell them.

Yeah that’s my question. When non conference events test bats do they have to pass 240 regardless of stamp? Wish usssa would clarify this.

So new bats made with the old stamp can’t be produced after September? Sis has bats coming out weekly that have the old stamp. The Helmer 44 line stuff and anarchy have bats coming out every couple of weeks. Also this past week, Miken dropped the last call line. Or maybe they were made before the September deadline?

For all the money and time involved in running Utrip why is it so hard to get a clear answer?

How hard would it be to make everyone comply with the new standard? Testing is at 240. Play ball!

Instead, 3 years from now guys will be pulling out the wrapper “grandfathered in” bats.

The backlash by people when they said everyone would have to use 240 bats was epic. So they grandfathered them in. Now 10% like yourself are upset. But they made the 90% happy.

Can't make everyone happy in softball no matter what you do.

It’s laughable to say you are attempting to make the game safer then be swayed by public opinion. No player is going to vote for a softer ball or higher limits on bats.

I actually didn't do anything and read about it on oldscout just like you.

I've never heard anyone mention its to make things safer. I think its to bring the scores down.
