question for Mike Dill and other senior players???

Mike Dill asked a valid question to me last week on this site about senior teams not going east to play and it got me wondering....

Why don’t the seniors create their own GRAND SLAM of senior softball championships with four different associations?

Yes... the playing rosters and playing rules would have to be fairly the same but...there could be four big world events spaced out across the country.

Anyone active senior players have any thoughts.

Playing my first 40+ tournament in AZ this weekend and it is an absolute blast. Balls and bats are great without a doubt. But the pace of the game and atmosphere is phenomenal. I did realize I am gonna have to learn how to play a position again though! Lol The Mississippi River rule is trash and only applies to certain teams I have found out. Also had someone tell me that Sonny’s team had some guys under 40 using fake IDs, I don’t buy it! 🤣. Oh well, still gotta score more runs than them to win right?

3 40 Major+ SoCal teams (out of the 4) have no sponsorship, and having 3 travel tournaments that require flights, rental cars, rooms is tough for many. Vegas is a great location.

If the complaint at the senior level is the East teams have to come West, 9s like USSSA teams complaining about going to FL for Worlds. You know that's where it is every year.

The most attended senior program in the country is SSUSA.

In an effort to increase competition they has a few regional restrictions of rosters.

For the bottle three divisions in each age group your team has to be built with boarder it states on either the est or west side of the mississippi..

For he top division they allow a small number if players that are not from boardering states but those players must be from your side of the mississippi.

At 40 years old and older, why does a GROWN "MAN" need any type of sponsorship for what he loves to do and a for a recreational girl's game.

At 40 years old, if you can't afford to SOFTBALL, a recreational girl's game, life has truly passed you by and your priorities are definitely F'ed up.

I can see in your 20's and early 30's but at 40 and over, if you need a sponsor you are definitely a Democratic LOSER!

To 40+ player, it's funny that you bring politics into this, calling them "a democratic loser", all while looking like an idiot, by doing such a thing.

As idiotic as you are for doing such a thing, I Do agree with you in regards to 40 year olds needing sponsorships. Can some of you please answer this...why do you need sponsorship at such an age? Call me crazy, but shouldn't you already have an established career/job by then?

I sometimes see younger people playing conference who are always missing work to play, putting softball before a career and wonder how they'll turn out after the game passes them by. Is needing sponsorship at 40+ one of the results of not having a career due to softball when younger?

Maybe some people are just different. Even when I've been asked to play for free, I still offer to pay and if not, I'll buy drinks or pizza or whatever to show my appreciation.

Mr. E, I do apologize for bringing politics into a softball board.

However, you are correct! Some of these players do put softball before their career. I'm one of the few fortunate and blessed to have a career that allowed me to play at the highest level.

At the end of the day, at least 90% of players have nothing but old softball war stories to share without any retirement.

Not to mention health problems from all the "supplements"!

So with the lack of response... is no tourney east worth going to?

I know the Smoky senior events suck because of field size on the main field...

So is there any other senior association worlds worth going to east if the mississippi ?

Softball 40... Sponsorship isn't needed, that is why most West coast teams choose not to use their own money to travel for a different world championship, when all the best already play SSUSA. West coast teams play 2-3 "travel tournaments per year, which they pay for out of their own pocket. That equals 3 mini-vacations from a budgetary standpoint. Add to that, the need to take one's family on a vacation (non-softball related), and that is why some of us out west choose not to spend more of our personal money on a world championship tournament 3,000 miles away. With a sponsor, some may choose to use an extra day or two of vacation time to play, but not if it is going to take away from a family vacation.

that’s why I am asking if there are any world tourneys worth going to east of the mississippi?

Let’s face it...for many teams reno and the westerns are getting old.

I would gladly exchange one or both of those events for one or two very good senior worlds back east or mid west

WSL - Nashville, Tn - August
USSSA - Viera, FL - September

Senior Worlds for USSSA in 2021 is listed as August on the schedule DW posted. Not sure what Fla in August will bring but thinking it might be a little warm and humid? :-)

Assume that you are looking at a big draw for M+ team Tim? Not that many here on the East Coast.

SSUSA does East Nationals 1st weekend in August in northern, VA (weekend before ISSA Works in Richmond so you could get a 2 for 1? :-)

And I believe you know but SSUSA has stated allowing "bottom three" divisions to pick up 2 players non border on their side of the Mississippi starting 2020 (was supposed to be 2021 but they allowed it this year due to Covid).

Do you know if any of those events have similar roster rankings/rules/balls to SSUSA?

I am on a 60 MP team that might consider heading east for say...a well attended 55 Major event.

We already understand the limits in participation after 60 years old...We are just wondering if there is somewhere that we could travel for a well attended 55 major event/world we can play in.

Sadly...I don’t think we would be interested in playing in florida usssa...especially with how they, in my mind wrongly, decided to re-invent the successful ssusa wheel on rosters, balls and homerun stuff.

Seems like ISSA pretty much just runs the east coast.

ISSA (based out of VA) is very similar to SSUSA with a few differences.
4GG for entry fee
0-0 count (no foul)
only need a license to verify address (MUST in state or border)
team registration is $15 per year
balls are AD Tattoo (hotter than SSUSA IMO)

Major is 6HR allowed with only 5 runs per inning, same as SSUSA

Depending on the time of year:
Senior Cup in Roanoke, VA end of June is a very nice tourney, great area and a couple of VERY cool complexes (Botetourt and Moyer)
Worlds in Richmond in early Aug teams
The open end of Oct in Myrtle Beach is very nice, turf fields all 325

You will 6 - 8 55M teams in most of these events

Just like someone said above. Why should the majority travel to the minority? As a player that has been traveling back East to play, I don’t see it being beneficial for a Major Plus team to spend 8 -10 grand to play in a tourney that is gonna have 3 teams, maybe 4.

USSSA has done it for years. East coast teams not traveling out west. So why should we leave our 10 team tourneys to play in a 4 team tourney.

Plus the weather sucks back East.
