Personally, i did it for fun and just to get outside and love of the game...the "local" guys covered most weekend tourneys in the area, as I typically traveled for CUSSSA events - and I would only do a league game if I was last on the list to fill in... |
But, there are plenty of umpires that count on games being played - not only on weekends - but all of those weekly scheduled leagues around town as well.
While tournaments are not getting played, and all the players are itching to get their Underhand Junkie fix...think about the folks that need the games, even more than you want them.
I know a handful of retired individuals that are on fixed incomes, that umpire...
I know many folks that have the best jobs they can at the moment - that probably don't have an aggressive 401k and lots of perks...
I fault neither for adding additional income into their lives - or planning on umpiring to be a way of providing a more comfortable living for themselves and/or families.
The guy that still pulls 15-20 league games a week and 10 more tourney games on the weekend - I'd bet he'd like to be on the field as well.
