I don't believe there are any coaches in the conference. |
I think you mean the managers. The managers are usually the sponsors or people that moved up from the lower levels with the sponsor. Or along the way someone the sponsor respected from another team and picked them up.
There are a few managers that kind of offered to do the stat book or book travel for a team in order to be a part of it and learned the ropes and respect of a conference sponsor along the way and became a manager.
Some of the good managers also were former players.
Some of the better managers below the major level over the years I thought was Kerm Stricklin, Jose Sanchez, Todd Ankney, Tim Barnes, and I always thought Danny Kwilas was good although he was only in the conference one year with ropeclub.
Our own Strojan Kennison was a master of loading up teams during the season when you think back to Northwest Combat when they won the 'B'.
It is very hard for a AA or A manager to make the jump to managing Major players though.
The Major managers are harder to evaluate. Dan Smith won the major but it was hard to tell who was making the moves there, I guess Steve Smith gets the credit but it could have been managed by committee for all we know. Helmer has made a nice transition to manager I feel, especially being more vocal last year. Kendrick is the master at putting together first year teams when you think back to Albicocco in 2016 who had a 10 run lead in the Major World Series winners bracket game with a first year team. And his Smashit Sports team that won the major in 2017 put together before the season started. And of course Rector probably has the best Major record in history.
Many on the outside think its slowpitch and managers don't mean anything but I would disagree. Managers have to have offseason roster change skills, sometimes they have to put the sponsorship packages together, they have lineup creation, pitching and defensive vs offensive decisions and have to have some leadership qualities.
