I have not only been an umpire for for close to 52 years, I have been an attorney for close to 42 years. The game has obviously changed over the years. The bats and balls are state of the art and absolutely very powerful. The players are stronger. There is the legal doctrine of ďassumption of riskĒ. The players have also signed releases of liability. Does that mean we should continue as is regarding player safety and hide behind legal language? For now, all we have had is pitchers getting injured. My concern is that someone will get killed. I believe that any and all safety measures should be enacted as rules to protect players. Players have wives, husbands, girl friends, boy friends and kids. If 3 extra feet can make the game safer, than do it. If requiring pitchers to wear helmet-masks can make the game safer, than do it. Letís not have the lawyers and lawsuits get involved. More important, letís not have loss of life and very serious permanent injury take away from our great game.|
