Re: Tyler Ervine and Jason Branch
JB Ball, you are correct when you say that ‘coaching’ in adult softball is funny. The proper term when referring to someone like Miller is ‘manager’ because that is what the ‘coach’ actually does. I’m pretty sure they even give out ‘manager of the year’ at the Conference level. They are usually in charge of much more than just writing a lineup or booking travel, which if you have never done for a mens slowpitch team and staff, it isn’t easy at all and very time consuming. The manager is someone whom a sponsor can trust to run the team the best way possible with the money they put into it. I didn’t personally go to a tournament after the Smoky until Worlds, so you can see where my trust is. And yes, players should have suggestions about the roster, not input. When you go to work somewhere and they need another employee, you suggest someone who may be a good fit for the job but you have zero input unless you are in management. This is why you hear people say very often that you must run a high level team like a business. And as a sponsor, and someone who played a little baseball and softball and coached travel baseball, if I see something wrong that is causing a player to struggle then I will go to said player and give my advice. It takes several people to run a high level team, so give credit where credits is due.
