JB is saying that even though the balls were all "bad batch" balls for what the pro m usually is, there was also some really soft balls in the batch. So you didn't know going up to the plate if you had bad balls which you could still hit out or REALLY bad balls which went know where and would be caught by the outfielder if you went for a homer or caught by an infielder if you went for a single.

So it was more than just hard vs soft balls it was luck of the draw if you had a soft ball or a really soft ball.
