I pitched in SSUSA TOC a few weeks ago (60M) and one of the teams wanted to use a screen and not sure why but umpire was going to allow it? I said I didn't want it so we didn't use it. Game has risk in the middle, always has. I have pitched for a LOT of years and can usually tell when someone is coming at me on purpose but sadly it's part of the game (wish it wasn't, I don't hit middle but I know some P do because they want you to come back at them, crazy!)
I agree with most that the bat/ball combination is the main culprit but in senior game we can go 10 ft back so that helps a LOT but there are times I still pitch in front of rubber where I am 48', just depends on game situation.
My biggest gripe is and will ALWAYS be using shaved sticks, the bats we have especially in sr game it's not necessary to shave them but they are all over and it's sad.
Sorry for the long-winded response but as for suggestions, simply ALLOWING pitchers to pitch farther back is the simplest solution because no one wants to hit crappy balls. And I mean I CAN pitch from 60 feet but there are times I don't, giving me a choice helps!
Stay safe and have a GREAT season!
