Yesterday on facebook someone said that it was a "USSSA conspiracy" and "political" that Team 24 was listed in the final SoftballCenter computer rankings at #2.

The computer rankings are a formula that calculates the rankings based on each teams performance in conference and world events for the entire season. So how can it be a "conspiracy" or "political"? In fact the computer rankings were created to judge performance based on the entire season without human intervention or politics or conspiracies playing into it. You input the scores into a spreadsheet and based on who teams beat, who they lost to, where they finished, and what class of teams they beat and lost to it spits out the rankings. The same way it has since 2008.

Smash It won 12 tournaments and the Conference regular season point standings and finished 1st in the Computer Rankings. Team 24 won 4 tournaments and the Major World Series and finished 2nd in the computer rankings by a slim 5.6 to 5.2

Same thing happened on the men's side 3 years in a row. The team that finished 1st in the computer rankings did not win the Major World Series.

Here is the formula used since 2008:

The minimum number of Conference 'B' and above games to be eligible for the Computer Rankings is currently 12.

The computer rankings rules have been unchanged since its beginning in 2008.


Rankings Formula explained:

Each team receives:
8 points for defeating a Major class team
5 points for defeating an A class team
2 points for defeating a B class team
1 points for defeating a C class team

Each team receives an additional:
8 points for winning a tournament
6 points for finishing 2nd
4 points for finishing 3rd
2 points for finishing 4th

And finally each team has their point total reduced by:
1 point for each time they lose to a major team
2 points for losing to an A team
3 points for losing to an B team
4 points for losing to a C team
5 points for losing to a D team
6 points for losing to a E team

Each teams total points are then divided by the number of games they have played against upper level (Major, A, and B) teams.

So the formula in mathmatical terms would be:

/ (total games vs M, A, B)

In short the formula is:

AveragePointsPerGame =
((weighted wins against upper teams)
+ (weighted top 4 in tournament finishes)
– (weighted losses))
/ (# of upper games)

The average points per game is then sorted highest to lowest and those are the rankings.
