If you have a curve ball that cross the plate/zone and lands outside the mat, it isn't a strike and if there isn't a strike mat, then it should be called a strike. Now on the flip side, you can throw a curve ball that goes around the plate and hit the mat for a strike, which without a mat would be called a ball because it never crossed 2 points on the plate. The latter doesn't happen as often as the 1st scenario.
Joe, what are your thoughts on what i said about the batter's foot even with the front of the plate?
