Re: What are your Conference questions/concerns to bring up at the Convention?
The mat in theory seems like a good idea, but we use it in league and it's horrible. For pitchers who can make the ball move, you lose the crossing the plate and getting a strike called on the inside or outside as it needs to land right behind the plate and that just makes it easier to hit, thus a losing battle for pitcher safety. Umps just need to NOT be afraid of calling a strike on anyone, regardless of who they are. My personal opinion, lower level player so I know it doesn't mean much, but I think the players shouldn't be able to set up with their front foot in front of the plate at all. It must be even and then when they stride to hit, stepping ahead of the plate on the stride is fine, but not setting up that far ahead. I think that will help the pitchers for distance and also allow the pitchers to throw the 8'-10' and have it cross and CALLED a strike more often as the batter is back in the box. again just a lower level player opinion who's been playing for 34 years and umping for 23....
