we are playing in St. louis.
it’s about the third inning... the home plate umpire sticks and Steels is getting most of the calls.
we are up to bat and the ump calls
an obvious ball a strike..
their catcher a guy they call Bus driver of something like that..I think his name is Jimmy Devine yells/screams over to us “shut your FN mouths”...
I am on deck and the batter ahead of me makes an out..we get all over the ump again and again the father yells the same thing except this time..it’s a lot louder and obviously an attempt to be intimidating.
I start walking up to get ready to bat..
Chris is batting behind me.. He says to the catcher from the on deck area.. “ come on..you don’t have to be like that”.
the catcher yells cusses and mouths off again.
right around now..I am moving the dirt around in the box trying to level it out.
In the corner of my eye I see Chris in his normal way..walking to the dish without looking or saying anything.
The catcher sees it to and stands up and swells up
in typical major team steroid fashion.
At this point everyone sees this isn’t heading i the right direction.
their first basebal..I think it was Howie Krause starts walking toward the plate saying something.
Our first base coach happens to be built of the same timber Chris is.
he steps in front of their first baseman and places his hand of the steels player chest as if to say...you need to back off
He stops moving toward the plate
Chis is now standing right next to me, face to face with the catcher that’s still “trying” to be intimidating.
No one else can hear what Chris tells him.. I can hear it because I am still in the box.
In a whisper says.. “OK.. her are your choices... stop running your mouth now and let’s just play ball or let’s do it right now YOU AGAINST ME... .
The catcher looks at a Chris and doesn’t say a word ..
Chris says great.. let’s play ball..and if you mouth off agin..I am going to find you one on one in the parking lot after the game and beat your azz.
For the rest of the game the whole Steele’s team NEVER SAID A WORD... and..we won.
The whole conversation Chris had with Devine could only be heard by myself and the umpire..we were the only two within 15 feet and Chris was whispering.. but..I have no doubt his message as heard loud and clear once their catcher got back to the dugout.
