He tried to build the top half of softball divisions into a program that has never been able to survive on its own/the multi region team rosters. what I call national all star teams.
I believe if you want softball to head in a healthier direction every division needs to also be monitored and localized/regionalized in SOME manner.
You still use prior teams rankings for individual players but you also add something like.
Every team picks a home site and....
D and below team rosters cannot exceed players living more then 20 miles out.
C rosters need to have players within 40 miles
B rosters need to be within 100 miles
A rosters writhing 300 miles
AA rosters within 500 miles/maybe something like bordering states.
Major rosters within 700 miles/maybe two bordering regions.
For some divisions that might have to be tweaked for areas with low population density.
But somehow...softball needs to go back to what it looked like when it was thriving.. It was localized.
EVERYTHING STARTED TO GO WRONG WHEN MULTI STATE TEAMS WERE ALLOWED.
The Conference should also study what population densities they want to target and spread Conference events to make it more fairly spread out then it is now.
Maybe end the double tourney weekends. give the regions an extra event instead.
It’s taken many years of mismanagement to get the game to this sad point.. it will take great softball minds and time to ever turn it around.
Unfortunately...based on what usssa is trying in seniors...it sure doesn’t look like the usssa leadership understands what was one of the most important factors in softball thriving in the past... THE TEAMS AND ITS PLAY... WAS LOCALIZED/REGIONALIZED.
