FGM (Chris’s team) is playing a team full of big guys based out of florida.
around the fourth inning FMG is down big...maybe by 18-20 runs
the florida based team is having all kinds of fun trying to punk FMG.
FMG is wearing bright colored uniforms and being from the san francisco area they are obviously (for the time/era) getting messed with about being gay/queer in their brightly colored uniforms and such.
at this point one of the Florida area players hits a big homerun and the bench starts going crazy on DRIVING IT DEEP ON THE SF QUEENS (or something like that)
I am watching the game and know all the FMG guys
chris is playing shortstop
chris has had enough and looks at the team and as politely as he can he says..”that’s enough of that”.
their whole bench, in group tough guy fashion, rolls over in laughter and spews a bunch of crap Chris’s way...
Chris puts his head down and slowly and quietly walks right to their third base dugout gate..
it’s the only way in or out.
the team doesn’t know what’s going on until Chris fills their only exit and in a regular tone of voice says...
“you all sound like real tough guys so how about this..one by one all you tough guys come out and let’s get it on. JUST ME AGAINST ALL OF YOU...as I drop you the next guy that wants some of me can step out and let’s see who is real and who is a bytch. either that or..how about you boys just shut it?”
no one in the dugout stood up or mouthed off at that point or during the rest of the game so Chris said..”alright then..let’s play ball” turned and jogged back to shortstop.
the real kicker...in the bottom of the seventh Chris hits the game winning homerun...and no...he didn’t mouth off..but his chest looked a little thicker as he jogged around the bases.
Chris’s second baseman that game was Kiki Garcia that played about 15 years in the big leagues...plus many many more years in high level sports..
Kiko later told me that was about as bad azz as anything he ever saw on a sports field.
the funny thing is..In total real tough guy status ..I have no doubt I have told that story more times then Chris has..and I have said it about ten times in 30 years.
I have learned Real tough guys do not talk about such things...and no..I am not a real tough guy.
