You see..real tough guys know softball banter doesn’t show toughnes.
I had the opportunity to play with three or four REAL TOUGH GUYS... none of them started intimidation stuff on the field..but they sure as hell ended it.
for the most part the steroids fake tough guys were all talk.....it’s just softball and let’s face the real facts..there are very few players dumb enough to fight over a hobby...
I mean really...how small of a world must you live in to fight over softball.
The top guy in softball that I believe loved trying to intimidate was Dave Neale and Steeles.....the things “senior” allowed or coaxed his players into was quit frankly embarrassing. And that was when he was winning 95% of the time...Dave showed his true self once his team started loosing and he refused to let them shake hands after games... you see...pride came before Dave’s fall.
I remember our team walking over to shake their hands after the first victory over Steels we ever had against his team (making us something like 1-8) and they sat in the dugout...
I walked up to Dave sitting in the corner on the bench and said ...You could walk out and shake hands when you were winning almost every game and now that your just competitive you’re not man enough to have your team shake hands...I am embarrassed for you.” He just looked up and said nothing...
At that point one of the real tough guys I had as a teammate walked to the gate of the Steele’s dugout looked at the players collecting their things and loudly said... “so the old man in the corner over there can take your dignity for a few dollars and a Tee shirt... I have no doubt your Dad would be proud”
In my experiences in softball the head hunter intimidation stuff was mostly started by the coaches or sponsors not the players.
I have to admit I kinda fell to that point one time with KEGS...it was not to intimidate but to retaliate..but it still was not the right thing to do.
in the end...I never saw a “softball intimidation bully” ( that’s comical to write) actually big enough to try to intimidate a bigger tougher guy.
now if you want to list tough guys that played softball..that’s a whole different list because none of the tough guys that I knew that played softball were intimidation bully’s trying to get an edge on the field of play.
then again..most of my serious days playing was before steroids became the norm and composite bats..now a days..almost any idiot can hit the ball hard... therefore..the toughest guy on any Conference field is THE PITCHER... if some bloated up roid boy doubts that..put your azz on the mound.
there were a few occasions where i posted in the internet how a few influential teams acted improperly..it was done more to share my belief they were hurting the game and needed to change.
I can sum it up pretty easy..if a usssa official hears any team rep talking about going after someone within the lines as a way to intimidate..that person should be suspended for no less the three months of the season.
