With regards to third basemen, the starting distance of even with the bag is fast enough to allow time to actually react so that added distance of playing a few feet back allows for additional time to continue the already in progress reaction. As opposed to the distances and speed involved in the 120 mph at 50 vs. 53 feet scenario where it is essentially humanly impossible to consciously react.
I have pitched a couple occasions. I've also heard many a pitcher say they could have caught a ball if they had more time to react.
The key question is how much time would be needed. Whoever posted the 50 vs. 53 feet question initially gave the 120 mph ball exit figure. At those parameters, no the three feet would not help them.
