I guess then all we will have are players with no spouse or kids. Even though some conference players get paid, ( which they should be reporting as income to the IRS and should lose their amateur status) the overwhelming majority have full or part time jobs which they need to support their family. If they were to get seriously injured or worse yet killed, the family unit could be seriously damaged. I am only saying that because of the changes in equipment etc., there needs to be a much closer look at enacting rules to increase the safety of the games. Years ago, everyone wore steel spikes. They weren’t safe. People got injured. A rule was enacted to prohibit them. I don’t remember hearing from upper level players that if “ you are concerned about safety find a new hobby”. LOL is certainly entitled to his opinion, I just don’t agree. In the 51 years umping games, I have witnessed too many players get seriously injured on the field.
