I made my 4 kids (2 boys, 2 girls) play all sports, join 4h, band, and for the girls dance.
My step son wasn't athletic but liked basketball, failed at football, and was very average at baseball. Today he plays some rec volleyball and nothing else.
My son loved basketball and was really good until 10th grade but now is average, hated baseball but likes slowpitch. He spent too much time playing video games growing up but ended up getting a scholarship to play video games at the University of Akron and won a national championship last year. They practice, work out, and on 3 occasions traveled the country playing other colleges.
My twin daughters played everything and were pretty good at everything but ended up their last two years of high school playing only fastpitch. One was team MVP her senior year. At our high school if you didn't play travel then you weren't good enough to play on the varsity for volleyball or basketball and my kids only played travel for fastpitch so thats what they ended up doing.
Today one is playing club ball at Miami of Ohio and one is at Ohio State majoring in chemical engineering.
The only slowpitch any of them have played was this past summer when I put a coed team together since they were all finally over 18 years old. They had a blast.
But people don't watch slowpitch anymore because they can bet on and watch any pro sports on the tv. Kids don't play as much sports because of video games and the cost and time commitment of travel ball is very high.
My brother lived and breathed softball, has 3 daughters and they all do dance and have never been on an athletic field...crazy.
It is a different era. Peoples interests have changed.
