From my posts, you can see that I donít always support the umpires. Having ejected only 5 players in 51 years, I have never gone towards and physically any player in a dugout or even on the field. I canít think of any circumstance where it would be permissible for an umpire to go to the dugout to confront a player or manager. Quite frankly to do so would be stupid and suicide. I canít imagine anybody in the dugout would assist an umpire who tried to enter a teamís dugout. The umpire has the ability to eject a player or manager if the circumstances so required. The only true friends the umpire has are the other umpires on the field. Even if there are 4 umpires doing the game, they are severely outnumbered. As an attorney for 41 years, if a player threatened to physically injure me or did in fact commit a battery, I would not reciprocate. I would just request any applicable criminal prosecution and file a civil action. Again, folks, every player and umpire has a wife, girlfriend and/or child. Please remember that. Knowing Doc the way I do, I am entirely confident he will deal with the umpire accordingly.
