I have played 2 tournaments so far this year and have witnessed pitchers get murdered more times than i did in the past. The balls and bats seem to be tuned up to the point now where pitchers are in greater risk of serious injury than ever before. Infielders, even the best, are also taking some serious shots in the field. i am fully aware that each player knows what they are getting themselves into but i still do not understand why we are not working towards doing something to ensure some sort of safety. last weekend i watched both our pitchers get knocked out of the games as a result of being hit multiple times. one of those hits was on purpose to send a message/retaliate. i then watched one of my teammates hit a ball up the middle that hit the pitcher square in the chest. he had no chance and was down for some time. yes you guys are tough mfs but jesus christ. what needs to occur for something to change. is it part of the game yes. is it right, we can debate it.
what i have done now is create a facebook group for softball players all over the country to share their injuries from being hit by the ball while pitching or playing the field. i wanted create a log of all the people everywhere who are getting seriously injured so that the powers that be can really see what is happening. we hear stories here and there about it but if its all in one place it may carry more weight. you can find this group by searching "The Official Softball Injury Log" on facebook. Feel free to join and share what you got.
i am pretty sure i am going to get a lot of shit for this and that is fine, but someone has to do something before one of our fellow competitors sustains a serious life altering injury. we just recently convinced most pitchers to wear a mask and shin guards. whats next? fully catchers gear? this is a game we all choose to play for fun in our free time. it seems to have turned into one of the most dangerous rec sports to play now and not many seem to mind.
have a good day and stay safe.
