Double doors everywhere that will accommodate the 36" timpani with at least 4" to spare on each side.

Those double doors must also NOT have the bar in the middle. Even if they insist that the bar can be removed....nope....NO MIDDLE BAR IN THE DOORS.

Also, make sure a licensed audiologist comes in and sets up the room acoustically. Normally I would just save this for a new auditorium, BUT, you will be living in that band hall and everyone's ears will thank you for it.

The Wenger website has some good suggestions for designing a band room.

Trace your pathways everywhere you might need to go. Outside, to the gym, to the cafeteria, to the loading area. Make sure you have 48" doors or double doors with an easily removable (with a key, no tools) center post. Call it a "mullion" if you want to be fancy.

Power in the floor near your planned podium location.

Several power outlets on every wall.

Sound system built in that puts the metronome behind the band, controllable from the podium.

Big industrial shelving for equipment. We have the Wenger GearBoss stuff, it's stupid expensive but it's great.

If you're marching, think about props. Where will you build them? Where will you store them? A big roll-up door from storage to outside makes that easier.

Think about where your offices and practice rooms are. Ideally you would have line of sight to the practice rooms from both your office and from your podium.

48 inch doors EVERYWHERE.

A percussion ensemble room big enough to store any marching and concert instruments comfortably. Even if this is a JH band hall.

My last suggestion is having any electronic hook ups near where you want your podium to be. Less running cords, the better!

Ask for 4ft doors for everything

Ask for power outlets above your lockers

Ask for more storage than you need

Ask for storage that is as generic and repositionable as possible. Once you're in your space you'll find better ways to organize/store

Ask for industrial-level uniform racks that won't pull out of the wall

Ask for a short throw projector, so the majority of the band hall is usable for color guard tosses

Ask for a larger ice machine (if you currently have one)

Ask for larger restrooms to accommodate kids changing clothes for rehearsals

Figure out how much storage space you need, then increase it about 25%.

Brownsville ISD recently built identical, stand alone facilities at Pace and Porter high schools.
