Wow, students are so entitled! The time has come once again where students are threatening to quit because they don't like next year's marching show. They haven't even heard it yet. All they know is the title. I will not be manipulated. We have a good show selected for next year. Just goes to show that you can't please everyone all the time.

Poor Baby!!! Let us just derail the entire program for YOU. Head off to Art 1 and make some hand turkeys if you want. The world will carry on.

...I've had the following conversation.

Kid: Why are we doing this show next year? You've ruined my senior year...I'm going to quit. What do you think about that?

Me: Everyone is important...however nobody is so important that we can't be successful without them.

Yeah. The same thing happens when you take over a program because "Mr/Mrs/Miss so-n-so didn't do things like that." Oh well...have fun not being in band.

Sounds like they're mad because they *think* the show won't have their favorite song (which will change between now and Summer Band) in it.

Kids try to pull this on me every once in a while. Probably all of us have dealt with it at some point.

Stick to your guns; you know what is best for the program.

Yep. Every year I have kids tell me I've ruined their senior year. 99% of them are just emotional and mad you didn't pick their favorite song. Sing it in your best King George voice - "You'll be back..."

Don't take it personally. I know it’s challenging sometimes, and it's easy for me to say that without being in your shoes. Don't let a few students ruin your year or the start of the next one. I always tell myself, 'We will be okay—even better—without them.' Have fun with the students who are staying!

I just tell them, ok. And then move on about my business. Sometimes I offer to email the counselor for them. LOL!

I'm willing to bet that kid wanted to quit and was looking for a reason. If not that then they wouldn't like the drum major, didn't like how their instrument felt, yadda yadda.

Happens all the time. But you'll get plenty of kids excited for it and that excitement will spread like wildfire.

If a student is willing to quit over the theme of a show (assuming its not sacreligious or offensive of course) they probably aren't the type of student who you will be reliable during the season anyway.
