Yes, we are not doing anything the last week of school before break, but since when is going on a cruise for a week considered an excused absence

On the surface, it doesn't. BUT understand that in many cases you have to book a holiday cruise more than a year ahead of time. How many schools, especially ones that decide on a whim to change from a 5 day week to a 4 day week, know what the calendar is going to be 18 months ahead of time? My district once started the fall semester without a master schedule...4 days where the students had to be there...but had nowhere to go!

In general, an excused absence just means the parent has sent in an excuse or informed the school of the reason of the absence.

It doesn't matter at all.

An absence is an absence is an absence. 90% attendance is all that matters.

We have a kid that only attends class maybe twice every 2 weeks from being gone with this, that, and everything else. No way he is at 90% attendance but the district keeps on excusing it. Oh well... the child will graduate at the end of this year and then he becomes someone else's issue.

An excused absence does not mean that it does not count towards the 90% rule. It just means that they have a valid reason for being absent. They still will have to make up the missing time.

An excused absence only applies in terms of truancy.

Furthermore, the only valid excused absences that do not require the time to be made up are court, medical hospitalization, religious, or bereavement.

For example, I had a kid miss eight of 10 days just like you were discussing, and the campus was sending out truancy notices. Turns out the kid was battling cancer and was missing because of chemo treatments. That seems to mean to be a pretty valid reason for not coming to school.

There are lots of good reasons students missed school. There are lots of poor reasons as well. That’s why there is an attendance committee whose job it is to look into those reasons. If you are not on that committee, then don’t worry about it. Just teach your band.
