Band in the Square

Band in the Square (on the 4th of July) by Pierre LaPlante is on the grade 1 list. Should this keep a director from selecting it as a March?

...until your Exec. Sec. tells you that you can't use it as a march.

We have one of the stricter secretaries with that rule, so I would be surprised to get that ruling on this specific piece. It is in the program notes of the piece that it is a patrol march. Ultimately, if anyone has questions, email music at uiltexas.org and get Brad Kent or Gabe Musella to rule on it. Have that in hand when you deal with your secretary.

...there have been several bands within a region with one of the stricter exec. secs. (don't know where you are...might be yours). Who did just that after the Sec. denied their selections. The State office told them that the Exec. Sec. has the final say what is considered a march for UIL.

We've done this before, it is fine and perfectly allowed as it is a valid patrol style march. (Great piece if it fits your group!)

Depends on your region. I’ve seen it used as a march many times. I’ve also been in places where if it doesn’t explicitly say ‘March’ in the title then it’s not correct.

No...BUT, your region sec. is the final authority that determines if a piece qualifies as a march for UIL purposes.

If they say "that's not a march", then you've got a big problem.
