School Start Date

Just curious anyone else have a start date earlier than July 21 (first day for students)?

Tuloso-Midway down here in Corpus Christi starts the 16th. I am so glad we don't start until August 13th! (And I wish that was a week later)

May be a dumb question, but I'm asking anyway...

Are you in Texas? A July 21 start date sounds like schools in other states (Indiana for example) that are running on the newest, all the rage, amazing school plan....the "balanced calendar".

Being simplistic here, this calendar goes 6 weeks on (5 day weeks), 3 weeks off, etc., with 6 weeks off for summer. This makes both semesters exactly the same length (IOW..."balanced"). To make everything "balance" the school year has to start in mid-July.

If you are here in Texas, this would be the first school I've heard doing this.

As for me, we start on Aug. 5.

Yep here in (far west) Texas. I don't think the idea is a balanced calendar although that might be preferable.
I guess it's the "year-round" calendar. We have ~9 weeks then 2 weeks off with ~6 weeks for summer.

I see no reason why our school system is still tied to the agricultural calendar anyway. And the AC has to run all summer regardless - put the kids in the building.

I'm going to preface this by saying I am on team 'normal' calendar. My AD and I work to keep things pushed as late as possible, as we feel it benefits our student-athletes and band members to have a later start. (And mostly succeed given our later start date than many)

That being said, I can see the argument over our calendars shifting. Currently, we have a traditional calendar based solely on the agrarian reasons of the past. Most countries around the world follow that 'balanced' calendar far more often, or go later into the summer before beginning their shorter summer term breaks. It probably does have benefits on learning loss that comes from the summer months.

That being said, with the way UIL sets contests for sports and us, it would penalize all of us for having a 'break' because we'd still be working. Most schools in this situation definitely penalize involved kids. At least UIL has agreed to the extra hour of practice for each day not in session at that June meeting.
