Do kids sign the UIL trophy?

I just had someone tell me that having the kids sign the back of the UIL trophy is disrespectful. I was a little taken aback by that and I wanted everyone’s take on it in case I was missing something.

It is a tradition at our school. The kids talk about which trophy their parents signed.

Absolutely let them sign it! I mean, if whoever says it is disrespectful has any working brain cells, they would realize they are signing the BACK side of the trophy...the side that is not facing you when it's in the trophy case so why should it matter?

My students are looking forward to "Legacy Day". This is what we call it as they get to leave their name on something that proves their success and leaves their "legacy" in the band hall. We do it after the front is finished being engraved and they all get a picture with it. We let them sign it anywhere on the back or bottom as long as it isn't too big.

Putting a UIL trophy that high on the pedestal is, well, crazy.

I've had the kids sign the trophy that THEY EARNED. It's a point of pride to them and an exciting moment. Whoever said that to you needs to have that stick-ectomy they need.

It's a chunk of wood for goodness sake. What is important is what it means. Sign it, don't sign it. Take a pic of the band and post it on the back. When they come back as alumni the only thing that will matter is what they remember and the value that you give it.

I'd be interested as to why someone would consider it disrespectful. Those kids earned that trophy! My kids sign the back of our UIL trophies and they love doing it!

I don't think it is disrespectful at all to have the kids sign the back of the trophy. I've been doing that for years!

Just do it. Who cares what that other person thinks. we let them sign the back. Sometimes we even put a picture of the group on the back as well.

I had a principal get mad at me for that once. Hasn't stopped me. The front gets a nicely engraved plate, the kids sign the back in sharpie.

Disrespectful? That's that's an overreaction at best.

I think it's great! Do what is best your your students and program. Let others get mad over nothing on their own.

Students should absolutely sign their name. They were apart of the group that put the work in and should be recognized for that hardwork.

My last few years I had the seniors sign it. I never got any grief for it (admin actually liked the idea) and the underclassmen looked forward to becoming seniors so they could sign.

Someone thinks that the trophy belongs to the director and not the kids who do the work.
