Band leadership training

I don't have the funds to send them to a camp, so I'm going to need to do my own band leadership training. Unfortunately, I'm not that good at coming up with stuff like that myself! What are some good resources out there for that could help?

I realize that I'm old and things have changed....
I never paid full price to send my leaders and flag corps to camp. I might find some dollars, but the student paid his own way to camp. I gave them a choice to go or not to go - sorta gave them a choice. Many wanted to get outta-Dodge during the summer. They'd do most anything to get to go to camp. FYI: over the years, mine went to camps at NTSU and Tech. They loved it. Of course we would try to visit a Dr. Tim session if possible. One I hired a "Dr. Tim Type" to do a clinic at my school for only my folks. Another time, I brought in a Flag guy to run a summer camp. They were all fun.

I do lots of leadership training for schools. The two best books I have read and utilize are “Developing the Leader Within” by John Maxwell and anything by John Wooden. (UCLA basketball coach that built that program)

It’s all based on service based leadership and how to get people to follow you when you do not have any real authority over them. (Student leader type stuff)

Life changing for my student leadership teams.

Check out the Classic Leadership books by Tim Launtzenheiser. Workbooks and a teacher book.

I know Dr. Tim has a book that’s very good, has worksheets to complete and everything. This year I kind of designed my own after reading some books over the summer. My favorites were Lead it Like Lasso (can’t remember by who) and Leading with the Heart by Coach K. I also really read up on dived into the Pyramid of Success. John Wooden was the GOAT for a reason…

I also introduced my kids to the idea of the aggregation of marginal gains and Sir Dave Brailsford.

There are many great videos from people like Dr. Tim on youtube. For a student leadership training, there are also handbooks that are designed for the teacher you could use to create a "curriculum". Those books are for sale at places like amazon.com or bookstores I am sure.

Think about your own goals and purpose for why you're doing the training.

Are you trying to improve the culture? Are you trying to help them learn how to be marching techs? Your leaders shape your band program so they are worthwhile to invest in.
