E-print and UIL

I just called JW Pepper to order 3 scores of a new Grade 1 piece of music. They told me that extra scores are only available in e-print. Is e-print allowed for UIL?

I would contact your region secretary to find out for sure. You may be required to bring a letter of permission from whoever owns the copyright to the music; I had to do this a few years ago. The rule changed, and a letter from the music store was no longer acceptable.

You could still go to RBC, sit in their UIL room that had all the current UIL scores for every grade and spend an afternoon really looking/analyzing?

Southern Music on Broadway...my dad would take me to trumpet lessons across the street with John Goodwin while he browsed the band music.

I only went to the last Southern Music location during the fire sale at the end, but I spent a good number of visits at RBC before it was sold. I definitely miss Tom and the resources we once had in San Antonio to go look for music. It's a shame things went away with the purchase by Pepper...

Pepper had a reading room in Haltom City for a few years. It closed during Covid.

Southern Music was great prior to 1986 before RBC opened up.
The only issue was parking, other than those horrid rest rooms upstairs. Remember the rattling pipes?

Yes, but you will have to provide a recipt from Pepper that shows that you paid for three e-print scores. Otherwise it will be assumed that you bought one, and photocopied it.

It's a perfectly valid form of publishing a score. Of course it is.

An e-print score usually includes a note at the top or bottom of when it was purchased and by whom - but you may want to include a copy of a purchase order or an email from Pepper stating that the scores were legitimately purchased in your score.

You may also want to have/make the scores bound using the spiral binding machine that's collecting dust in your campus workroom. A manila folder makes a good cover if you cut off the edge.

Just have the letter of rights compliance that JW Pepper provides as the first page. I bind mine with a comb binder and make a nice-looking cover page.

To my understanding, yes. The rule is scores must be "copyright compliant". Just make sure you buy 3 and it says "3 copies sold to ______" on the bottom so they know all 3 are compliant.

Might confirm with your region secretary ahead of time so there are no surprises for anyone on contest day.

Always want to check with them since what you read on an online forum isn't necessarily considered to be legitimate -- especially since they get the final say.

That said, as long as you also provide them with the receipts, I have seen this done before.

As always be careful with advice on an anon board. That being said, when you print your scores it'll say 'x copies sold to name' on each score. That's considered proof for UIL in the situations I've been in both as a director and a judge.
