Chimes and timpani for marching?

For marching band purposes, can I use a sampler for large percussion like timpani and chimes? We are not really set up to travel with those.

We use a MalletStation for those. It really makes things easier for travel. We just mount them to a mallet.

Ya know.....my region secretary told me I could not use anything like that. It would be considered recorded music and that it was not allowed.

Your region secretary is incorrect, we have been doing it for over a decade now at all levels of UIL Marching Competition. MANY others have too.

So, all those bands that use keyboards/synths to simulate piano sounds or super low sounds or sounds that are on normal to a marching band instrumentation are violating the rule? Either you misunderstood your region sec, or they don't know what they are talking about.

get a dtx and patch the sounds, and switch them as needed

Yes, you can. It must be "played/triggered" by an eligible student.
