Eastman Flutes

A few of our beginners showed up with Eastman Flutes this year.

They play pretty well, but a couple of them are getting excessive black corrosion (I'm guessing) around the headjoin. We clean it, but then within days it's right back.

Is this a common issue? How do we get it so our kids can play well.

First off, I'll be honest I despise Eastman as a brand. I hear a lot of people say they have good experiences, but our only encounters have been pieces of junk...

That being said, I agree with the others, if they're silver plated it's probably tarnish. Even nickel silver does it. What you could do is teach the kids to use the area between their thumb and forefinger to wipe that area, and then their finger inside the receiver when they put it together. Make sure they swab it when they take it apart.

Eastman is a higher-quality Chinese brand - which puts it on par with mid-quality traditional brands. The black "corrosion" is likely due to imperfections in the metal. Clean it and make sure it's put away dry. It may also be flecks of the case sticking to the wet instrument.

They've also got a decent guarantee and product support, so I'd reach out to the retailer.

Are they silver? Could be tarnish.
