ex assistant

We had our assistant leave for another job this year.I found out amongst some of the students that this assistant is still contacting some them via text. Do you just leave it alone or say something? Or hope that eventually it will stop. They were not made to leave here it was their decision.

You definitely say something. I had an assistant leave who had been with the district a while, I was in 2nd year. He did not leave on bad terms. He had kids messaging him quite a bit the year after he left. He screenshot everyone of them and sent them to me. Eventually, the kids stopped because we showed a united front and they learned to communicate with me.

It wouldn't be surprising if the kids initiate it. It happens, but he/she should be keeping you in the loop of it. The fact that he/she hasn't is a huge red flag. The fact that the kids are bringing it to you (if they are the ones who told you) is a bigger scarier red flag.

Similar experience. Took over a band program where the ex director had been there for quite a number of years. He was still snap chatting them daily. I did report it to my admin, they did nothing. 3years later, I am not aware of it happening anymore.

Red Flag, that person should have never been texting students. I would contact the parents and let them know.

...there was a director in West Central Texas that was arrested and fired last spring for doing this very thing. Made the front page of the newspaper.

A grown adult contacting a teenager for any reason is cause for alarm, unless said contacts are monitored by parents. There is no legitimate reason for your former assistant to be contacting any of their former students.

Report to your campus principal, who can call the admin of your former assistant's new district. This is above your pay grade. If you don't report said inappropriate conduct and something untoward happens, you could be found negligent.

Regardless of how you feel about it you probably need to clue your admin in. If they wanted to contact the ex assistant and ask them to stop they could, or they could just leave it alone. But worse case scenario, if something bad every happened you have covered yourself it would never look like you were covering for them.

I would also suggest that the "clue-in" be made via email, and print a copy of the conversation to keep in your files. That gives you written documentation that you informed your admin. Sometimes when things start going south, emails seem to disappear from the server...
