Chad has always been a class act. He will be missed. When I moved to Houston a regret was not running into him very often. We would text back an forth instead of intruding on his visits to M.D. Anderson, visits at M.D. Anderson are long and taxing. I will miss Chad. Prayers will not stop for his family.
Chad was a near and dear friend of mine. We went to college together. He was a much better trombone player than me but never was a jerk about it. He was always helpful, always kind. He was a helluva drum major.
We both made it down to Texas as soon as we could. We would see each other at indoor competitions, as he had an indoor winds group and my son does indoor percussion. We would love catching up and rooting on each other's groups, plus everyone else. He was always so gracious.
When the cancer started, he came up to MD Anderson with Sonia. We went for one of his famous walks, where he'd tell everyone it was a great day for a walk. I'm not a morning person, but that walk was one of the best hours I've ever had. We talked about band, but more about life. His attitude was always upbeat and looking forward.
I got to see him in December, again at MD Anderson. Cancer was starting to win, but Chad wasn't gonna go down without a fight. I told him he looked better with brain cancer than when I did when a little piece of skin cancer was removed (he really did!). Sonia was there, and I got to meet the kids. They really are amazing, his whole family is.
We all are better for knowing Chad. He was an incredible mentor, musician, clinician, but most importantly he was the best person he could be. All of us, even if you didn't know him, have been blessed by his years on earth. I'm pretty sure that when he went to be with Jesus, he was greeted "Well done, my good and humble servant".
Rest in peace, and Rock Chalk Chad. We'll see you soon.
I was a colleague of Chad's when I first began my career. He was always knowledgeable and respected. I sincerely wish his family peace in their difficult time. I also hope the students and staff he leaves behind are doing okay. He will be missed.
