Other Band directors in the sight-reading room

I don’t believe they changed this rule, but if one of our sub NV bands goes earlier in the contest and sightreads the same piece, and we are there to help the director with the contest, there’s no violation occurring, correct? (We are technically hearing the piece beforehand)

Last year because of the COVID accommodations, our HS bands entered as NV and SNV and sight read the same level. We had kids playing in both bands, mostly switching between Euphonium and Trombone. They literally played the same part, just on a different instrument.

We alerted our region about the potential problem and they were cool with it. Your region may be different but ours was even pretty loose with the "not read, rehearsed, or performed" part of the rules because kids were on different instruments.

That's definitely a clear rules violation, regardless of which instrument they're playing. Can't believe your Executive Secretary would let that happen.

There is absolutely no rule via UIL to prevent any directors from watching sightreading before they go, whether helping a group in their school or otherwise.

Don't let anyone tell you anything else cuz they'll be wrong.

Now, some regions have made rules about this (21 did a while back but I'm not sure if they still have it).

The rule is … as long as you have not “read, rehearsed, or performed” the piece. Listening to it is OK.

Please correct me if I’m wrong?

The key phrase here is “student members.”

Wouldn't the "organization" include the director? Honest question.

Nope. Otherwise, current band directors couldn't judge contests where their level was being sight read. The "organization" refers to students participants.

Directors like me who teach both NV and SNV wouldn't be able to do sight-reading with both bands.

Absolutely correct here! If this wording wasn't present, then anyone who judges an early contest would need to answer yes to that question. Also it's not uncommon if you direct a 1C Varsity and do the 3A NV band that you would see the same piece as a director back to back in one or two days.

As far as directors in the room this is a public contest according to UIL. You should be able to be in the back in the room. Problem is there is a very passionate group of people who think this is cheating and will tell you to get lost if you are obnoxious about it. (Especially if you're trying to peak at scores or parts!)

I believe the students can't listen to the piece prior to the event, but that doesn't apply to the director.
