Salary Negotiate?

Was wondering if anyone has ever had the opportunity to negotiate salary when being hired.

I've been recommended for a 4A Head HS position with 15+ years experience and the base pay is a little low for my preference so if anyone has any personal experience with something similar, it would be greatly appreciated.

I just moved schools this year. WHen I was interviewing for this one, he threw a number out, and I said it was not enough. They came up with about 6K more to get me to sign on.

Having been told in the past at a 4A head job that they were unwilling to negotiate, I’d never take a job like that again. Every district should be able to negotiate if they truly want you. If they’re going to be cheap on your salary, just imagine how they’re going to treat your program as time goes on. Long story short, I left that program after a year. Non negotiable salary means I turn them down now and I don’t care if it’s just for 1 extra buck. It’s the principle

Are you going just by the base pay from the website, or actual numbers they discussed with you?

Because, especially in 3A/4A world, I know a lot of directors who are on admin pay scales or even have their own pay scale. One director I know doesn't have a stipend, because he has a flat rate of x amount of money (which was 15k more than I was making with the same job at a same size high school)

Once you have been recommended, you can totally negotiate. But it's a chess game, like "well...." mentions you never know how they're gonna react unless you read people well and you think they'll play ball. And in small school world, having that conversation with the right person is important too, because every district is different. In some districts its the HS Principal, some its the superintendent...some its the asst superintendent. And one district it was the AD. If you try to have that conversation with the wrong person, there's a lot of back and forth and sometimes hurt feelings.

I once received a job offer, the superintendent told me what the "current" salary would be, but he also said that he could work some numbers and come up with more if necessary, and then said, "What will it take to get you to come here?" Never been asked that before. I didn't want to sound greedy, BUT, he did ask, and I knew that another $2500 in the salary would help when it came to rent. So I said, "could you add $2500 to the deal?" I could hear him doing some pencil work and he said, "Let me get back to you."

Never heard from him again.

With that said, if they have offered you X, and you think you can get Y....if they agree to give you Y, then you probably should sign the contract.
