I will be doing some school-approved PD this summer. Yay! My school is arranging all the travel which includes flight (within US) and a couple nights in a hotel. I just got an email from our school secretary asking for basically all of my identification (Name, DOB, Employee ID, DL #, and here's the kicker- my social security #).
I've seriously flown all over the world on about 100 different flights and no airline company has ever asked for a social. They don't even have a place to input that in the reservation system. She claims she went to a training this past summer that confirmed that the travel company my district uses will start asking for that info for reservations and sure enough the travel company is asking for it currently.
I'm not giving my social. There is no reason a travel company needs it. Have any of you ever run into this issue?
Thanks!

I wouldn't provide the SSN. No travel agency, airline, or hotel is going to ask for that information. Your DL or Passport should suffice given those are government issued documents.
I would tell them no and if they push back, ask for documentation that states the SSN is needed.

As a person who also travels a lot, asking for a SS# is pretty fishy. DL# and/or passport # I can understand. I would be cautious dealing with any travel agency asking for one. It sounds like the travel company your district is using is not very reputable. The odd thing to me is the fact that your employer already has your SS#. They do not want to be the ones to provide it for the same reason you shouldn't.

Just say no. They don’t need it, especially with all of the data breaches this day and age.

...if you look on the back of your SS card, it says in plain English that "This number is not to be used for identification purposes".
Go figure

A social security number is not a valid form of identification in the United States. No one needs it except an employer. (Yes, even the credit bureaus have no business with it, but they're basically in charge of our financial system now).
This company has no business asking for it. Don't provide it.
