Tuners on Stage at UIL

New to this so forgive me. Are students allowed to use a tuner on stage at UIL as long as it doesn’t make any noise? Can’t find anything prohibiting it on the UIL website and we go in a couple weeks. TIA

Yes, they are allowed! I even give them time In between songs to tune if need be.

This is incorrect. Dr. Kent Bradley even answered this at TMEA during the sightreading clinic. Student are allowed to have tuners.

We've used tuners on stage and in sight reading for better than a decade and not once has it been an issue for me.

Apparently not in Region 11. I was told no tuners BY A JUDGE. I questioned it and they claimed it was the rule. We had to pick up all of the tuners. It was great since we had to wait 15 minutes to go in to SR from the stage. Still got a first division, but tuning was affected. The judge who told us we couldn't use tuners even mentioned the tuning. Maybe Dr. Kent should clarify this.

Sounds like 11. I had my own concerns with a few of the usual people that keep getting asked to judge. I'll just leave it at that.

this judge is wrong on multiple levels. You should report him/her to the region chair as well as TMAA.

Some judges don't know the rules either. It wouldn't be up to the judge to enforce a rule like that anyway.

A sight reading judge once made me stop instruction because I was tapping my foot on the podium. He was under the impression that the director may only produce a beat by snapping the fingers. We full stopped the instruction and called the region secretary to come in and clarify. Stressed the kids out to be called out like that, but the judge was corrected and I got to tap my foot for pulse and we made a 1.

Don't assume the judge is right. Know the rules VERY well and get your region secretary involved if you think you are getting hosed.

I would have asked the judge and the host to show where in the rules that was stated. They should have a copy of the rules at the event.

More than anything, I bet it was a judge who was on their high horse and made an arbitrary rule without authority.

...more to the point, if there's a dispute like this, it isn't in the judge's purview to make a determination. The ruling has to come from the region secretary. Same thing with DQs...judges don't DQ anyone. The judges only report the infraction after the performance, and it is up to the RS to DQ a group.

Absolutely! Last year every one of my students had a tuner on their stand for UIL. (Mainly because I only had 18 winds, so I wanted every note as close to perfect as possible...lol. It worked)

Short answer, you won't find it forbidden in any rule, so it is allowed at UIL.

Longer answer: Absolutely allowed! We have our kids leave them on the stands (Clip them to stand) connected to their instrument. It's an invaluable tool to help monitor intonation in spaces that are not their normal playing location. Just make sure you just keep doing whatever you do normally is my opinion!

I've seen bands play a short tuning note just before the 2nd and 3rd selection performed at UIL, before the director takes the podium.
