Today I had a counselor print out the list of kids signed up for HS band for next year. (Super early I know)
I'm really bummed that my group will be the smallest its been in 12 or more years. We've been very successful, and the kids can really play their instruments, yet our numbers will be down.
I expected to have a slightly smaller group than this year due to a small senior class next year (thanks covid) and a few other reasons, but I just don't get it. We are a small 4A school, the kids have a good time, we go to Six Flags, Disney, etc. I think that I'm most upset with losing some really good kids for what seems to be no reason at all.
I'm sure some people are in the same boat, but I just needed to vent. I am going to do my best to retain the students who haven't signed up yet.

Doesn't help that band kids get hurt credit wise for being in band. How did we let this happen?

It's not just band either. Other activities and athletics are also losing numbers. Kids just don't want to be active in things like this anymore it seems. As of right now it looks like we will at least hold the same number for next year if not gain a couple more kids so I'm excited about that. I really don't know what the answer is to all of this.

You're not alone - I'm hearing similar situations from lots of people.
Keep working hard with them while they're still in the program, and keep loving those kids who are staying.
