Spring Break and instruments going home?

Do you require your students to take instruments home for Spring Break? Is it a benefit?

I do not require it. Our UIL contest has been the Wednesday before Spring Break the past 5 years or so. The students need as much of a mental break as I do. If they want to take them home, great! If not, I don’t blame them for wanting some time off!

Yes of course. Instruments go home every day. Spring break is not different. We also have UIL 7 days after we get back. I assign a short memory test the day after spring break for kids. Some thing around 8 measures. The idea is I probably can't get them to do a lot of detail work over the break, but just trying to memorize will at least keep their chops in shape.

I tell students that there are many repairmen that are not a part of the school that come in during spring break. We don't know these people so it is best that they take their instruments home over spring break. At least I've done my due diligence.

You have two questions.

1 Do I require it? Yes.

2. Is it a benefit? No. But it *could* be a liability to keep it at school, so ...

(And furthermore, when we went on Forever Spring Break in 2020, kids who didn't take their stuff home had a heck of a time getting back to school to get it)

The kids that are going to practice do so without being required to. At best the others may open their horn case and practice some at the last minute if they know they will be tested on their return from Spring Break.

When is your first test after Spring Break, and is it for chairs?

Kids that care will practice.
