"Revised" UIL SR Criteria and Preparing for C&SR

In regards to the "revised" SR requirements, how are you deciding what to pass out to your bands in order to prepare for C&SR? For example, the "revised" criteria for level 3 (the level my group reads) is exactly what the previous level 1 was with the addition of no key changes, no meter changes, no cut time, and a shorter length (two minutes or less). Very few of the previous level 3s fit those criteria. In fact, very few of the level 2 do. I hate working on things that don't need to be worked on, so I don't want to work on changing keys, meters, or longer pieces if they are not going to be "evaluated". Is the level 3 now the old level 1? The level 1 criteria seems like the past two years' level .5. The only thing that seems to have remained the same are the ranges.

If they can read the old requirements for level 1,2,3 then they can easily read this year’s music. I’m also working on reading more advanced music because I want better readers.

Time will tell if they have anyone disregard those requirements (happened before with level 3), but I read it the same as you do. The Level 3 really corresponds with the old Level 1. With my HS group we read enough music that I don't really practice the sight-reading game as often, but I'll probably still stick with an old Level 3 just for practice.

For our JH my assistant dug through the information on the past pieces we haven't purchased and bought five pieces that line up better from the more recent past. (Hadn't really updated our sight-reading folders in a while)

Given everything our programs have been through I'm grateful to see some understanding of that in the criteria's, but I think it probably needs some more tweaking. Hopefully this doesn't come back to bite me, but I think the Level 3 requirements are too low for a 3A HS.

I think they are right in line with JH/MS groups, but you are right: they seem to low for a group with HS students. I think (and have said this since 1998) there needs to be a separate sightreading levels for JH/MS and HS. They shouldn't share the same music (FYI - I also have the same opinion for the PML).

A high school group reading Level 1 or Level 2 has more in common with a typical middle school group than a traditional high school group.

Those are kids who are your non-varsity and sub-non-varsity players. They're not the ones trying out for All-Region.
