What districts in Texas are currently or will be next year operating in a four day week?

I'm curious:

What town/ district?
Which day off?
Do teachers have to come in on the off day?
Start and end times each school day?
Reduction in salary from times of five day school week?

Had an article on this just a few weeks ago. Current schools with 4-day School weeks.Most are off on Fridays but a few are off on Mondays. Lots of information in the article

We started a 4 day week this year. I definitely love it. Here's

What town/ district?

Which day off? Friday - makes it easier to get buses for those long distance away games, and we can do our long evening rehearsal Friday afternoon and be well prepared for our game that evening and any Saturday contests

Do teachers have to come in on the off day? No, but we do have a PD Day 1 Friday each month. It usually is fairly relaxed as far as PD goes. Generally non-STAAR subjects have no more than 8:00-11:00 with our afternoons free.

Start and end times each school day? 7:45-4:00

Reduction in salary from times of five day school week? No. Salary Schedules were adjusted to equal the what it would have been as a regular 10, 10.5, or 11+ Contract. The board also passed a significant pay increase across the board on top of that, so we are actually making a good bit more than last year on the 5-day week schedule.

I still don't see how this aligns with research re student learning.

I also don't see how this benefits families.

If you teach in the district and your kids attend the district you have long weekends together.

Might benefit kids with fewer teacher absences from those that take Fridays off to extend a vacation trip.

Kids would only miss 1 rehearsal instead of two during TMEA week.

Sometimes budgets matter and there is a finite amount of money. If transportation costs are that significant in a rural area that money saved on fuel can get kicked back to other operations or maybe even another CTU.....

An awful lot of corporate America is 4 day weeks. Trade jobs and retail will always be 6 or 7 days a week so it's a matter of teaching kids to manage their time and 5 days a week doesn't necessarily alter that skill significantly. Heck, how many kids in college only have classes 2 or 3 days a week? If it doesn't extend the first and last day of the school year I don't think it really matters that much once the kids adjust.

Most of what we do in public education isn’t for the students. It’s for daylong daycare, beancounters in admin, or politicians.

If it were for the students, the calendar and day wouldn’t start school before 10 AM, we’d go year-round, and we would have a school year not tied to an agricultural calendar from 150 years ago.

Standardized tests would be abolished. And play would be a central part of elementary curricula.

The public school calendar is being tied to the theme parks and vacation entities. They screamed many years ago when some school districts were starting earlier in August. The theme parks want schools to start mid to late August. The politicians in Austin listened and passed laws restricting school start times. Public school is not about kids or learning. It's all about politics and selling testing materials and technology which benefits politicians who profit from their business interests in them.

I agree with most of what you said. But I will just add that a good amount of research has shown that students are more productive in the "early" morning as opposed to later in the day. Although certainly not as early what we do now.

An equal amount of research shows that adolescents need 10-12 hours of sleep per night, and would be best served by coming to school an hour or two later.

Yet we have high school start times at 7:25 in many areas.

Jasper, TX / Jasper ISD
Fridays off from Oct. - April
(5-day weeks in Aug, Sept, and May)
We come in one Friday a month.
School day starts at 7:50 and ends at 3:30.
No reduction in salary.
