percussionists who want to be band directors

I serve as a Music Ed field supervisor at several universities, and through the years I have been assigned student teachers who are percussionists, who are interested in becoming band directors, rather than percussion coordinators.

I would like to build a stronger base of information for these student teachers, including the names of some percussionists who are/were successful band directors.

I would also welcome any additional advice/insights regarding student preparation and guidance along this road.

Make your first job a beginning band teacher. you will learn along with them and have a better understanding of the instruments.

I'm a flute player who learned so much about brass just by teaching beginners.
Percussionists are no different. Jump in with the bandlings and have fun.

Justin was one of my student teaching mentors and I worked alongside Sebastian at Barbers Hill. Both of them teach percussion and band at a high level.

I do a band as well and love it, but one of the directors I look up to in my area is
Greg Dick hes a percussionist as well
also the assistant at Friendswood Julio Sanchez is the percussion director and runs the second band . The second band plays amazing

Craig Ewing would be a good person to reach out to there. Taught at Calallen HS, retired, then worked at Beeville ISD for a few years, and is retired now again.

Victor Lara is another I can think of who is now retired from Flour Bluff ISD.

Actively teaching right now Jeff Valperts at Calallen and Chris Morrow at Gregory-Portland.

Thank you for naming Craig and Victor. They are awesome. I don't know the others but I'm sure they are awesome as well.

I could name myself ... 1st Runner up in 1C middle school honor band (a long time ago LOL). That was up against Craig Ewing too.
