Hello everyone! I have two questions.
1. I have a very small library of piccolo, contra bass clarinet, and bari sax solos. I read on the UIL website that those instruments can play any solo that is suitable from the flute, bass clarinet, and alto sax lists (respectively). Am I right in understanding if I give my bari sax a class 1 alto sax solo he can still play it as a bari sax class 1 solo? Or am I misinterpreting that info?
2. If I have chosen a solo that has several long repeated sections (for example, a 3 page solo that repeats the first page, and then the second and third page repeats together), but the piece the solo is based on does not follow those repeats, would my students be penalized for not following all of the repeats and instead copying the format of the original piece? Is it better if they just follow the written repeats?
2) This is something we always tell our students to be prepared to repeat, but always ask the judge. They probably will tell them not to do long repeats like that. Remember the judges have a limited amount of time usually planned for each event, it helps the event run better on time. Since we started doing solo and ensemble again I've only seen them say yes once, and that was at State.
