Is this a March for UIL?

I’ve got a piece that fits my hand really well. It does not have the word “March” in the title and it really does not follow the form or style of a March.

But in the description of the piece in the score, the composer calls it a “joyful march.”

Can I use it for UIL?

Although Woodlands Celebration is described as a "joyful march" by the composer, I don't think I would play it as my march at contest. It's not a bad piece, I just believe that it doesn't fit into what is traditionally accepted as a march. However, as everyone else has proposed, your region secretary is the best person to ask. Let us know what they say!

If the tempo marking said "joyful march, mm = 120" then poo r "joyfully marchlike" I think you'd have a case and I'd fully support you. After listening to it and seeing the score, I think your region secretary will likely say no, but it never hurts to ask!

Other poster below offers a good suggestion though. Region secretary for UIL is best person to ask!

I gave it a listen and I personally would not classify this as a march.

I’ve seen people play a Marche for UIL. As in the dance.

Sounds like it's reaching a bit to me. That being said, ask your UIL Executive Secretary about it. Some regions seem to be a bit more permissible on this than others too. This is something I would never trust an answer from anyone other than UIL, and I would make sure I had a paper trail via email too just to be safe.

Ask your region secretary. They vary wildly.

I asked mine about a piece last year. Secretary responded with a no. I don't usually press but I asked again and included evidence of this piece being performed as a march in our own region as well as others. It was followed up immediately with an email to the whole region on what the definition of a march is.

We played March of the Belgian Paratroopers 2003. A former student of mine was an assistant director in east Texas and played the recording for her head director who told her it wasn't a "proper" march. We won OPS with it, so I guess it was. I hear there are parts of the state where almost only Karl King marches are played for UIL (as an unspoken requirement). There are many interpretations as to what is a proper march. To each his or her own. Just clear your UIL selection with your regional secretary.
