Brass Mutes

Any recommendations for trumpet straight mutes? This will be for HS concert band. I will probably buy some of the Humes (red & white) mutes for some of the "less responsible" students. But will probably get around 5 "nicer" ones. I've liked the Dennis Wick ones, but just seeing if there were some other options.

I switched my entire trumpet section to Tom Crown straight mutes and absolutely love the sound.

Be aware that Tom Crown mutes were designed for C trumpet bell flares - they seat a bit farther in to a Bb trumpet especially once the corks are broken in. You'll need to adjust tuning more with a TC than with any other conventional kind of mute.

Denis Wick is the standard. The Bach polymer ones are OK, and might be a good option for your less responsible students.

The Humes & Berg corks are awful. I've had to cut them off and replace them on new mutes. They just don't stick.

I do use Dennis Wick for my personal playing, but i understand not wanting to spend that much. Rather than those Humes, you would be better off with the Vacchiano line. They are actually much improved from the ones we used back in the 70s and 80s.

The Hume's Red&White mutes will silence pretty well if that is your purpose. Parents love these for student's home practice. If you're looking for that metallic muted sound go for a metal mute. I like straight mutes for the full section. The Harmon style is nice for jazz solos.

that is nowhere spelled right. Agree to never waste money on the Stoneline red & white. They make good cup mutes etc. Not straight.

Don’t buy paper straight mutes. Even your “less responsible” kids deserve real equipment. And so does the sound of your band.

I really like the jo ral copper bottom.

Don’t buy the cardboard. If they drop and crack they will sound bad. A dented metal will still sound fine-it’ll just look bad.
