BOA vs Area

I don't have a dog in the hunt, I'm sitting at home scrolling social media.

I see a few schools who went to BOA Waco today (and congrats on making finals!) who could have gone to Area. Some who have been UIL State contenders in the past It's a State year for everyone, right? I'm curious why a director would choose BOA over the UIL route.

If I knew those directors, I would ask them personally, but I don't. Just curious.

Outside of Meridian (1A) and Waco (Didn't qualify for the area contest), every school at BOA Waco was a 5A school.

In the future I may opt for BOA or US bands over UIL. Especially after this year, the judging errors and inconsistencies in UIL are even more apparent with competition suite. My scores tonight did not match recorded comments, and from the looks of things, an entire digit was left off of my scores from a particular judge in multiple sub-captions and there is nothing I can do about it. We have been state finalist the last few times and this year didn’t even make area finals because of what appears to be a clerical error. This is without a doubt my strongest group ever.

No, we were not.

I called and said brought up the issue and was told they would look into it. They called back 2 hours later after finals had been going on for an hour and said that everything looks normal. It does not look look even remotely normal.

In the old days it was paper and you could see it. Now you press submit and it’s gone honestly.

That being said if you missed finals by one judge that means the others weren’t high either. There is still the ‘bad judge’ rule in play with 2 music and one marching overriding it if you place high enough.

Not that I haven’t seen one judge tank us before, it generally others kept us in finals.

Verification period—that is exactly what the verification period is for. We are supposed to look set our chores and point out any errors we see. As far as inconsistency goes It is all a matter of a degree of subjectivity and you will not eliminate that in any system. The best system, many we argue about, was the Olympic scoring system—five judges toss the high and low—it works, but the criticism is it was to “global” judges had to look at everything. We have moved towards the BOA/DCI system and those two have a degree of arbitrariness that might cause one to think twice. So there is not perfect system and each system used, or tried will always encounter criticism of some sort

Pretty sure you are seeing 3A/5A bands at BOA. They had area last week. Every classification at state will start next year.

McKinney North and Burleson Centennial are 6A, but you're right the others I was wondering about are 5A.

McKinney North is 5A

McKinney Boyd and McKinney are 6A
