Hi friend it looks like there are some folks here that are threatened by your question. Iím going to pause from hearing any judgement on your situation and just let you know how it goes for myself. |
Iím a HS head. Formerly an assistant at the same program. 5A- 200 kids, 2 feeders. 4 band directors on HS staff.
When I was an assistant: 2 hours a day would be about what I needed to keep up with everything. 3 or more if I was organizing solo/ensemble or another special project. 4+ if it was the week of hosting an event, or it it was game day.
As a head: about the same. I delegate as much as I can to my assistants (bus ordering, facilities, pass off organization) so I could put out fires with parents or admin. When there are no fires, I fill in the gaps and split the duties with my staff. We are a team.
If an emergency comes up and Iím needed to step out of a rehearsal it is usually because of a parent/admin situation that must be handled that day. If I am behind on grading, e-mail, or admin work that can get pushed to the next dayÖ I push it to the next day or I stayed late to finish. The number one priority is always being present for rehearsals at my campus and with my feeders.
Iím getting the impression someone in your staff or in your cluster uses admin work as an excuse to not be in rehearsals. This isnít correct.
