To be honest, I'm in an every time State Marching Contest 2A band program and the more you worry about their motivation the less you'll get done. Basically, you just have to get out there and make it happen. Students will live up to whatever expectation you have of them. If they do something badly and you're ok with it, they will continue to do it badly and get worse at it. While supporting them and being motivational, tell them what you expect. Do that thing over and over, reteach and reteach until they get better at it. Also, set them up for success. Pick stuff that is at their level. For marching band, pick stuff that's one level below where they are musically. Best piece of advice I ever got was "you can be really tough at the beginning of the rehearsal but try with all of your might to get them to smile by the end of rehearsal."Let them know you believe in them and you have their back. But also let them know you're not accepting substandard work. Best of luck. =)|
