I have a PhD in Special Education, a certified Educational Diagnostician and a certified band director with 24 years of experience and I am unable answer the question with the information given. I do not know the child's disabling conditions so I do not know what they can or cannot do. I do not know what the drill requires, the difficulty of the music / drill and I do not know why you just seem to assume the student is not able to participate. I am able to say all students can do something, play something and move in some way, the question is are we willing to think outside of he box. By law we must, ethically we must, if it was our child we would expect it and sometimes...the need of the one exceeds the need of he many. Even Spock had to learn that. Figure out something that allows the student to participate, talk to your group and explain what you are doing. You will be surprised how they will help and support you because they know their peer has needs, after all they grew up with him and I can pretty much guarantee that real band kids will want to help. It's in our DNA. |
