All of those coaching positions are also teachers. Every single one of them. They are getting stipends to pay for them, (not enough to cover the volume of hours they work), and the kid isn't paying extra for it. |
Yes, the extra specialties, (guard and percussion), are skilled positions but they aren't costing the district an extra 2k per. They are costing 20 to 30 if they are a para or they are costing me, the band parent. And when my kid isn't in percussion or guard I'm paying for all the other kids while mine gets very little? I like to be generous but I also want to retire some day and maybe even eat a little before I do.
I'm all for providing great opportunities for the kids. I'm not okay paying a crazy amount of taxes to schools, (8k in my case), PLUS another 1k in "fees" PLUS $100 in private lessons per month PLUS $100 a month in needed supplies and reeds. At some point it gets crazy. And I'm a band director so I know how this works!
When the football staff starts hiring talent scouts to go to those other games instead of their own coaches we can talk. If they start hiring a strength and conditioning coach for 40k that isn't a teacher we can talk. When they hire someone else to plan out the season, draw up their playbook, teach their playbook, and analyze their performances OUTSIDE of the school paid staff then we can talk. Until then, we band directors need to get this under control cause too many are spending 200k or more OUTSIDE of the building for contractor labor while also getting paid 300k plus, (a staff of 4 directors is costing the district a bunch)! If you have 10 coaches they cost the district a total of 50k at most but they are also teaching 9 classes, (head coach probably is the AD and not teaching).
I'm all for quality bands. I'm not for this competitive marching disaster that we have become.
